Saffran - The healthy choice for delicious!
It all started way before the first SAFFRAN restaurant opened on March 17, 2009, in Glæsibær, Iceland. Two guys connected by their passion for good food, one an established Icelandic restaurantor the other one an international financier decided that it was time they created a restaurant together. What makes the story so unique is that the inspiration for the recipes came from both of them, and the best seller – SAFFRAN Chicken – is actually the creation of the business man. With the restaurantor´s insights into the restaurant business and the additions of a brilliant, enthusiastic young chef and a talented baker to the team, the concept came alive. The idea of healthy ingredients in secret recipes, with inspiration from the European and Mediterranean food culture mixed with traditions from the Middle East, created incredibly robust flavors… without white flour, without white sugar, without frying …. at prices no one can believe … seems so simple… and it is … simple genius!
From day one, lines were out the door… the buzz throughout Iceland spread… which of course required the SAFFRAN team to open a second restaurant (just to find out if they were lucky or good). In August 2009 SAFFRAN opened another restaurant at Dalvegur 4 in Kópavogur, Iceland. And guess what… lines were out the door… and has never stopped.
Along with the second restaurant, SAFFRAN catering was opened. It gave our loyal customers a welcome chance to offer the healthy SAFFRAN food to guests in their homes. It got off to a very good start and is growing rapidly and has become a vital part of the SAFFRAN family.

In June 2011 the third SAFFRAN concept was introduced in Iceland: SAFFRAN Express. It offers a limited selection of the same great healthy flavors with the addition of the SAFFRAN Express salad. Just like the other SAFFRAN restaurants it became an instant hit.
Now SAFFRAN is about to be the “food heard round the world” … as we move to North America (USA in the summer of 2011) and to other European locations.
SAFFRAN has grown every month since opening in 2009. It was named „The Best Newcomer Restaurant of the year“ in 2009 and „The Best Restaurant of the year“ in 2010 by a local newspaper. Numerous articles have been published in local papers and the restaurant has been featured on local TV stations.

SAFFRAN offers healthy, fresh, exotic, robust, flavorful and inexpensively priced food to “spice your soul and body”. We choose only quality ingredients, preferably from local producers, and all bread is baked using only barley, spelt and whole wheat. We use practically no sugar (only very limited in the desserts), no white flour, no frying and no MSG.
Saffran caters specially to kids with healthy, simple choices kids love and flavorful desserts that will leave everyone smiling!
The specialty of the house is the SAFFRAN chicken cooked in our Tandoori oven – heavenly bliss! Our SAFFLATS offer a completely unique expression of healthy and delicious. SAFFLATS are built from the ground up starting with the unique crust, baked to perfection with our special blend of spelt, whole wheat and barley, dressed with our healthy homemade tomato sauce and mozzarella, topped with a choice of meats and vegetables and a mountain of crispy greens with our unique sesame dressing. We can’t forget the burgers that are so healthy that some want to call them un-burgers! The charbroiled SAFFRAN Chicken Burger is so flavorful yet light – you can eat it every day and enjoy it. SAFFRAN also offers specially made sandwiches we call ”Naanwiches” and salads with our specially made dressings and fresh ingredients. Last, but certainly not least, we cater specially to kids with healthy, simple choices kids love and flavorful desserts that will leave everyone smiling.
